Leader of Banes Green councillor group Criticises banes Council’s Transparency Amidst Public Protest

Lambridge Councillor, Joanna Wright, Leader of the Green Group at Bath and North East Somerset (BaNES) Council, delivered a critical speech at Thursday’s Full Council meeting, voicing concerns over the lack of transparency in implementing the unanimously passed Peace Motion from July 2024. The speech was given as protestors gathered outside the Guildhall, calling out the Council for not fulfilling its commitments outlined in the motion.

Background and Symbolism

The Peace Motion, supported by all councillors, called for a ceasefire in Gaza, the release of hostages, meaningful dialogue for lasting peace, and respect within the community. Part of this commitment included flying the UN flag at the Guildhall to symbolise the Council’s dedication to peace. Councillor Wright stressed, “The UN flag is more than just a symbol; it is a call for unity and justice that we should proudly uphold.”

Transparency Concerns

The Green Group leader criticised the administration for restricting the flag display to one week instead of the four weeks requested by the Green Group. She also noted the lack of updates on important actions, such as the purchase of the flag and a letter sent to David Lammy MP. “Basic updates like these should have been shared,” Wright stated, highlighting how this secrecy undermines trust in Council operations.

Protests and Double Standards

The protest outside the Guildhall brought attention to perceived inconsistencies in the Council’s responses to international conflicts, comparing support for Palestine to that for Ukraine, as well as local issues involving racism and colonialist ideology.

Impact and Call to Action

Councillor Wright pointed to the severe humanitarian impact of the Gaza conflict, noting, “15,000 children missed out on life-saving polio vaccines because medical staff cannot safely reach them.” She concluded with a strong message: “Peace is not a one-week affair. The Guildhall should honour our unanimous decision by flying the UN flag for more than just one week.”

Councillor Wright’s speech was a call for the BathNES Liberal Democrat administration to align with its values and demonstrate a consistent commitment to peace and justice.
