Bath & North East Somerset Council has opened consultations on two major transport strategies designed to give local communities a strong voice in shaping travel over the next 20 years: “Creating Sustainable Communities in North East Somerset: The Journey to Net Zero” and the “Active Travel Masterplan”.
The Creating Sustainable Communities strategy focuses on four key areas: Keynsham & Saltford, the Somer Valley, Hicks Gate, and Whitchurch Village. It aims to expand travel options so more people can walk, wheel, cycle, and use public transport, while acknowledging that cars will sometimes still be necessary when sustainable travel isn’t feasible. Such a strategy is vital for developing better-connected, healthier, and more sustainable communities.
Meanwhile, the Active Travel Masterplan is intended to provide a blueprint for the current and future network of active travel infrastructure, promoting safer and more accessible walking, cycling, and other active travel modes. It supports all types of journeys, whether for commuting, education, leisure, or tourism.
The council is holding a series of drop-in events where you can learn more about these strategies and share your views. These events will run from 3 pm to 7 pm on the following dates:
• 18th July – The Hollies Council Chamber, Midsomer Norton, BA3 2DP
• 22nd July – Keynsham Community Space, Keynsham, BS31 1HA
• 23rd July – Guildhall Brunswick Room, Bath, BA1 5AW
• 30th July – Whitchurch United Reformed Church, Whitchurch, BS14 0PQ
Everyone is encouraged to participate in the six-week consultation to ensure that these strategies reflect the diverse needs and hopes of our communities. Additionally, an interactive map displaying active travel routes across Bath and North East Somerset will allow you to suggest new routes for even greater accessibility.
