Sally Calverley: Why I won't "suck it up"

21 January 2017

21st January is an historic day.

It is the day of the Women's March on Washington - supported by a Heinz varieties 57 other countries.

Here in the South West there are marches in Bristol and St Austell, where women will march in solidarity not just with women in America but also the Antarctic, Rwanda, Mauritius.. This is a spontaneous, international movement and an outpouring of emotion. Not just anti Trump but a complete rejection of the dark powers moving across the world.

As the Women's March in London says:

" We will march, wherever we march, for the protection of our fundamental rights and for the safeguarding of freedoms threatened by recent political events. We unite and stand together for the dignity and equality of all peoples, for the safety and health of our planet and for the strength of our vibrant and diverse communities".

This movement crosses borders, faiths, political parties. It says very simply "No!" to everything that would divide us, increase hate and suspicion between neighbours. And reaffirms our faith in humanity and determination to protect the links between neighbours, families, communities, nations.

The Resistance starts here. In an international, peaceful movement that celebrates the best and rejects the worst that humans have to offer our planet. But it's up to us to make sure it doesn't end here: it's up us to keep fighting for the rights and freedoms that our predecessors fought and died for. To demand that our government protects these rights and more than that, works to extend them to all peoples.

So no, I'm not going to suck it up. Not at all.
