Cllr Jonathan Carr's Open Letter To B&NES Greens

22 June 2016

Jonathan Carr

After Natalie’s visit to Bath, it seems necessary to look beyond our own area and discuss the state of our country as a whole.

While some in our party are unenthusiastic about the European Union, we must be honest with ourselves with the options presented to us. Brexit has always been a far-right project, its demands and campaigning points shaped by UKIP and the Tories. The concept of a Left-wing exit holds little traction in the nation at large.

The most important concept in politics is that of Political Capital. It is often misunderstood, but it is the means by which real power is wielded. In political clashes, the loudest of the victors gain Political Capital, and may use it to force through their own personal agenda or seize power.

The referendum has brought to the surface the ugliest forces in our nation. Fascism is growing, with its intolerance and fury permeating our discourse. It is these forces, and their leaders, who will gain political capital in the event of a Leave victory. They are the ones who will shape the future of our country. For us Greens, they represent a bleak future indeed. Our own vision cannot be furthered through Brexit, instead we must take a stand against those who seek to undo all that we hold dear.
