With just over six months to the European elections, Green Party candidates in the south west - including Bath-based candidate Chloe Somers - are gearing up for the election campaign ahead.

Two candidates from the region - Ricky Knight and Roger Creagh-Osborne - joined a group of Green European candidates from across the UK on a fact-finding mission to Brussels.

They met early this morning at St. Pancras to take the Eurostar to the Belgium city to see at first hand the work of Green MEPs and staff.

"The Greens in the EU Parliament are a coherent group of 43 MEPs, the fourth largest grouping of the 785 members, and unlike other groups we are united by a strong common agenda that focuses on environmental and social issues but goes much further," pointed out Chloe.

"This allows Greens to really make a significant difference in many areas - not just environment, but also mobility, education and human rights.

"In key areas Greens are regarded by the other parliamentarians as being the experts who need to be listened to even if they start by disagreeing with our position," added Chloe.

She pointed out that the effectiveness and influence of Green MEPS in Brussels means that voting green in Europe really does make a difference.

Bath & North East Somerset Green Party has selected its parliamentary candidate for the North East Somerset constituency, formerly known as Wansdyke.

Following a ballot of Green Party members within Bath & North East Somerset, Michael Jay, who runs a smallholding, was selected to stand in the North East Somerset constituency.

Michael, who also works part-time as a bus driver and runs a small beekeeping equipment business, joined the Green Party two years ago after finding no Green candidate to vote for at the 2005 General Election.

"I am delighted to be selected as candidate and shall put every effort into giving North East Somerset the opportunity to go green," said Michael.

On the membership council for the University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust, Michael has lived in the area for 25 years with this partner and three children, two just completed higher education and one still at school.

Living in a rural village, one of the key issues he intends to fight for is significant improvements to public transport and road safety including facilities for cyclists.

"Another vital issue in a rural constituency such as North East Somerset is far greater support for local farmers and Farmers' Markets," added Michael, who is a bee disease diagnostic microscopist for the Somerset Beekeepers Association.
